This is from the Missions' Convention keynote speaker this year, Bob Sjogren:
Cat: "You feed ME, you shelter ME, you love ME, you died for ME...I must be God!"
Dog: "YOU feed me, YOU shelter me, YOU love me, YOU died for me...YOU must be God!"
There is a common thing that affects us all...simply because God loves us and God has done so much for us, it is easy to become lulled into a false sense of security...and this is why many churches and Christians around the world have become so comfortable. Today's sermon, especially, brought to note the number of times the New Testament mentions suffering as a price that all authentic disciples of Christ must pay. We don't know when, we don't know how...but just as Jesus glorified the Father by obeying Him to death on a cross, so we too must be prepared to suffer, for the glory of the Father.
"Christ died for our sins!" That is not incorrect; it is incomplete.
"Christ died for our sins, to the glory of the Father." -John 14:27-28There are many many other examples of how people have become self-focused, even in a Christian context. It is important to always remember that the main character of the Bible is not us; it is God. When we read Exodus, we tend to think of Moses leading the Israelites of Egypt...WRONG. It was God bringing his chosen nation to the promised land...When we read Daniel, we think of how he was such a hero of faith...WRONG. It was how God was faithful to those who choose to serve Him.
